The Vatican and Little Green Men

Here's the curious thing about the head of the Vatican’s astronomical observatory saying there’s a strong likelihood that extraterrestrial beings exist and that they are part of God’s plan: not the “what,” but the “when,” as in “why now?” (Newsweek)
In the long interview he gave the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano yesterday, Father José Gabriel Funes, a Jesuit priest from Argentina, called the existence of extraterrestrials a real possibility. “Astronomers contend that the universe is made up of a hundred billion galaxies, each of which is composed of hundreds of billions of stars,” he correctly noted. (The interview was headlined The Extra-terrestrial Is My Brother.) “Many of these, or almost all of them, could have planets. [So] how can you exclude that life has developed somewhere else?”
For all the attention they got, however, Funes’ comments do not exactly break new ground, as my colleague Edward Pentin, who covers the Vatican for Newsweek, points out. In 2005 Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno wrote a 50-page booklet, Intelligent Life in the Universe, published by the Catholic Truth Society, in which he makes the standard astronomical points—lots of galaxies, lots of stars, some with planets, some of which may have conditions conducive to life. (Theological question: can God create life only in places with the right conditions? Or could He create life where there is, for instance, no water, or where the temperatures are
too hot or too cold? If not, why not?).
But the Vatican has never denied the findings of contemporary astronomy, which is now up to 288 “extrasolar” planets (that is, those that orbit a star beyond our own solar system), including one whose atmosphere contains organic molecules, the ingredients of life, as I blogged in March. As Consolmagno put it, “There is nothing in Holy Scripture that could confirm, or contradict, the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe,” which means that telescopes and not the bible will be the only reliable guide to the question.
In his L’Osservatore interview, Fr. Funes echoed that, declaring that “As there exist many creatures on earth, so there could be other beings, also intelligent, created by God. This doesn’t contradict our faith because we cannot put limits on the creative freedom of God.”
In asking whether little green men might be guilty of original sin, we are obviously in the realm of “how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.” But the theologian astronomers don’t blink. Fr. Funes said he was sure that, if aliens needed redemption, they “in some way, would have the chance to enjoy God’s mercy.” Consolmagno was more explicit: there’s no problem in getting the Son of God to every planet with ETs because, as Christians accept every Sunday during the Holy Eucharist, “Christ is truly, physically present in a million places, and sacrificed a million times, every day at every sacrifice of the Mass.”
So if the Catholic Church has accepted the possibility of aliens for a while now, why the high-profile interview in the Vatican newspaper? Applying the techniques of Kremlinology to St. Peter’s, Edward Pentin’s sources tell him it might be part of a push to demonstrate the Vatican’s embrace of science (in 1992 it apologized for that whole unfortunate Galileo mess, after all). Toward the end of the interview, Fr. Funes called science and religion “two allies which elevate the human spirit. There can be tensions or conflicts, but we mustn’t be afraid. The Church mustn’t fear science and its discoveries.”

Interestingly, the Vatican has plans to host a conference in Rome next spring to mark the 150th anniversary of the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin’s seminal work on the theory of evolution. Conference organizers say it will look beyond entrenched ideological positions—including misconstrued creationism. The Vatican says it wants to reconsider the problem of evolution “with a broader perspective” and says an “appropriate consideration is needed more than ever before.”
“We hope this will really be an example of how to hold an open discussion without overtones,” Gennaro Auletta, director of science and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University, told Pentin. “We simply wish to dialogue between people whose mission is to understand a little more.” Those who see science as a dogma and unchangeable are being unscientific, he believes.
That is a striking statement coming from a scholar with close ties to the Vatican, for the latest slander against science is that it is just as dogmatic and closed-minded as religion. (A theme that the execrable and fallacious film, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed,” pounds away at.)
Contrary to much conventional wisdom, the Church has often been in science’s corner. The telescopes of the Vatican Observatory are perched on the roof of the Pope’s summer home in Caste1 Gandolfo, and Jesuits were for centuries Europe’s leading astronomers. “Seventeenth-century Jesuits invented the reflecting telescope and the wave theory of light,” Consolmagno pointed out. “In the 18th century they ran a quarter of all the astronomical observatories in Europe.” And it was Georges Lemaitre, a priest, who in 1927 deduced from Einstein’s equations of general relativity that the universe is expanding—and that it therefore began in a Big Bang. It will be fascinating to see if the Vatican is now enlisting in the battle to defend science from its growing legions of attackers.

Panel: Reopen study of UFOs
An international panel of scientists, retired military personnel and former high-ranking officials called on the U.S. government yesterday to reopen investigations into UFO phenomena.
"Following in the footsteps of its now-defunct Project Blue Book, we propose that the United States Air Force reopen its research effort, or that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration initiate such a research effort," stated the declaration, signed by 19 panelists with the Coalition for Freedom of Information.
James Fox, director and producer of the documentary film "Out of the Blue," organized the unlikely group, including moderator and former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington. Members of the group spoke candidly of their unexplainable close encounters to a packed room at the National Press Club.
Mr. Symington, a pilot and former Air Force officer, recounted his experience near Phoenix in 1997, dubbed the "Phoenix lights." He said he "witnessed a massive delta-shaped craft" navigate over Squaw Peak, a mountain range near the desert city.
The incident, which was witnessed by thousands of people in Arizona, was televised internationally. The Air National Guard eventually claimed responsibility, saying that their pilots were dropping flares.
"I still don't know what it was," Mr. Symington said. "I can definitively say that this craft did not resemble any man-made object I'd ever seen. And it was certainly not high-altitude flares, because flares don't fly in formation."
He added that the "U.S. can no longer shun international dialogue about this phenomena."
The former governor was not alone. Other panelists from England, Belgium, Peru, France and Iran have documented evidence of unexplainable encounters with UFOs — short for unidentified flying objects.
Nick Pope, formerly with the British Defense Ministry, said that in 1993 the agency investigated the famous Rendelsham Forest incident, east of Ipswich, in Suffolk, England. The panelists included former U.S. Air Force personnel who witnessed the unexplainable sightings. He said his agency was contacted by U.S. authorities.
James Penniston, a retired U.S. Air Force senior security analyst who held top-secret security clearances for the U.S. and NATO, said he witnessed the triangular-shaped craft with blue and yellow lights in the Rendelsham incident.
"When we arrived near the suspected crash site, it quickly became apparent that we were not dealing with a plane crash or, for that matter, anything else we'd ever responded to."
Mr. Penniston said the U.S. government needs to reopen the investigations regarding UFO sightings and should not continue to dismiss those whose expertise is valid.
In 1976, retired Gen. Parviz Jafari of the Iranian air force said he encountered a UFO over Tehran. Mr. Jafari said he was contacted by officials from the U.S. who also were investigating the incident.
Mr. Jafari said the object was flashing with intense red, green, orange and blue lights. He said that at one point he thought the object was a missile and tried to fire a heat-seeking missile at it, "but my missile panel went out."
"Later, a once-classified document was released here in America through the Freedom of Information Act," Mr. Jafari said. "The Defense Intelligence Agency documented the event in great detail.... The DIA assessment said 'this case is a classic that meets all necessary conditions for a legitimate study of UFO phenomenon.' "

After spending 20 years as a fighter pilot, he was appointed to the Strategic Planning Branch in NATO while a Colonel in 1983. He then became Wing Commander of the Belgian Air Force Transport Wing and, in 1989, chief of the Operations Division in the Air Staff. It was in this function that he was confronted with the Belgian UFO wave. Promoted to Major General in 1991, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Belgian Air Force, in charge of Operations, Planning and Human Resources. General De Brouwer retired in 1995 and subsequently worked more than ten years as consultant in the United Nations to improve the UN Logistics rapid response capabilities during emergencies.
Dr. Claude POHER, engineer, astronomer and astrophysicist.
Had a 33 year career in space research at CNES (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales), the French equivilant of NASA and was awarded the National Order of Merit. In 1977, he created and directed, at CNES, the GEPAN (Groupe d’Etude des Phénomènes Aérospatiaux Non identifiés ; Group for the Study of Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena), the official French agency dedicated to the investigation and analysis of UFO reports. (Today, the agency is called GEIPAN.) He investigated numerous well-documented UFO cases while training investigators for GEPAN.
Jean-Charles DUBOC, Captain, Air France, Ret.
While piloting an Airbus A 320 over France in 1994, he observed a large lens-shaped UFO at about 25 NM to the left of the plane, also seen by the copilot and one steward. It didn’t move and then disappeared after one minute almost instantaneously. Duboc reported the sighting to Air Traffic Control and Air Defense Operations (CODA); simultaneously CODA recorded an unidentified object on radar crossing the track of the plane. The object seemed to disappear from the radar scope at the same instant as it did from the view of the crew. CODA investigations ruled out a weather balloon or any other aircraft.

Parviz JAFARI, General, Iranian Air Force, Ret.
In 1976, as a major and squadron commander, he was ordered by the Air Force Command to approach, in his Phantom F-4 jet, a large UFO observed over Tehran. During a wild cat and mouse chase, he attempted to launch a Sidewinder missile at the brilliant object but at that instant his fire control consul became inoperable. The UFO exhibited an extraordinary degree of maneuverability. Other electromagnetic effects were reported. The object was pursued by a second pilot, recorded on radar and witnessed by a General and experienced air navigation crews. A US Government officer interviewed Jafari in Tehran and the incident was described in a detailed US Defense Intelligence Agency document, released through the Freedom of Information Act. The DIA assessment said “This case is a classic that meets all the necessary conditions for a legitimate study of the UFO phenomenon.” Later, as a General, Jafari became the coordinating officer between the Iranian Army, Navy and Air Force. He retired in 1989.
Rodrigo Bravo GARRIDO, Captain and Pilot for the Aviation Army of Chile.
In 2000, he was assigned to conduct an internal study titled "Introduction to Anomalous Aerial Phenomenon and their considerations for aerospace security" involving previous case reports military planes encounters with UAP. For the last several years he has continued this research on recent and current cases affecting aviation safety in cooperation with the Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena (CEFAA), a branch of the General Administration of Civil Aeronautics, Chile's FAA.
Comandante Oscar Alfonso SANTA MARIA HUERTAS
Commander with the Peruvian Air Force (FAP), Ret. Specialization as an Air Force fighter jet pilot. In 1980, while a FAP Lieutenant, he encountered a UFO while flying his SU-22 "SUKOI" jet over the La Joya Military Base. He fired at the object, strafing it with sixty-four 30mm rounds, but the UFO remained unaffected. A US Department of Defense document for the CIA and the NSA, titled “UFO Sighted in Peru,” describes the incident. “The Peruvian Air Force tried to intercept and destroy the UFO, but without success," it states, adding that the vehicle’s origin remains unknown. CMDT Santa Maris is currently a Flight Safety and Accident Prevention Consultant for the airline industry.
Dr. Anthony CHOY
Lawyer and founding member in 2001 of the Air Anomalous Phenomenon Investigation Office (OIFAA), of the Peruvian Air Force, with a Masters from the Peruvian Air Force in High Management in Defense and Aerospace Development. He conducted a three year investigation on a sequence of sightings and landings of a UFO on behalf of the OIFAA in 2002, which were recorded on video. In 2003, this case became the first official UFO investigation in Perú to be disclosed by the Air Force.
Ray BOWYER, Captain, Aurigny Airlines.
In April 2007 he observed a UFO estimated as being up to a mile long, visible from about 50 miles away, in the vicinity of the Channel Islands. Some of his passengers saw the object, as did at least one other pilot in the area. An anomalous radar return was detected and the incident was reported by the BBC.

On the 12th of November 2007 former Arizona Governor Fife Symington moderated a distinguished panel of former high-ranking government, aviation and military officials from seven countries who discussed encounters with UFOs and official investigations. The event at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. was organized by filmmaker James Fox and journalist Leslie Kean.

From 1991 to 1994, he was the desk officer responsible for investigating officially documented UFO sightings to determine whether they involved any potential threat to the UK. As a result of his thorough study of some incidents involving the police and military during his watch, he and some colleagues became privately convinced that there were important defense, national security and flight safety issues involved with the unexplained phenomenon.
Jim PENNISTON, TSgt USAF Ret.
Also stationed at RAF Bentwaters, he witnessed a landed UFO with two military patrolman in nearby Rendlesham Forest. He conducted a 45 minute ground investigation and filed an official report. He has the original log book with drawings including details of symbols on the craft; radiation records; and plaster casts of landing gear imprints. He is the only person out the three witnesses that actually touched the UFO.
Charles HALT, Col. USAF Ret.
Deputy Base Commander of RAF Bentwaters, former US Air Force facility in the UK. He witnessed multiple UFOs at close range with six other military personnel in December, 1980, and documented this event on a pocket tape recorder. He also saw a UFO shooting beams into sensitive weapons storage areas at the base. He wrote an official memorandum for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) describing a UFO maneuvering through the forest and ascending, which was released through the US Freedom of Information Act.
John CALLAHAN, Ret.
Division Chief of the Accidents and Investigations Branch of the FAA in Washington DC, for 6 years during the 1980’s. He investigated an incident in which a 1986 Japanese Airlines 747 flight was followed by an unidentified object for 31 minutes over Alaska. The UFO also trailed a United Airlines flight until the flight landed. Data includes visual confirmation, air-based and ground-based radar confirmation, videotape radar evidence, air traffic voice communications and official reports.
Fife SYMINGTON
Two term Governor of Arizona in the nineties; cousin of the late Missouri Senator Stuart Symington; former Captain, USAF. While Governor, he witnessed to a massive craft up to a mile across over Arizona in 1997, also seen by hundreds of citizens. Although he attempted to investigate at the time, he also publicly spoofed the sighting so as not to add to the public hysteria, while keeping his own observation secret. He first revealed his sighting last March, and states that the craft is of unknown origin and the incident remains unsolved.

Deputy Base Commander of RAF Bentwaters, former US Air Force facility in the UK. He witnessed multiple UFOs at close range with six other military personnel in December, 1980, and documented this event on a pocket tape recorder. He wrote an official memorandum for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) describing a UFO maneuvering through the forest and ascending, which was released through the US Freedom of Information Act.
John CALLAHAN, Ret.
Division Chief of the Accidents and Investigations Branch of the FAA in Washington DC, for 6 years during the 1980’s. He investigated an incident in which a 1986 Japanese Airlines 747 flight was followed by an unidentified object for 31 minutes over Alaska. The UFO also trailed a United Airlines flight until the flight landed. Data includes visual confirmation, air-based and ground-based radar confirmation, videotape radar evidence, air traffic voice communications and official reports.
Fife SYMINGTON
Two term Governor of Arizona in the nineties; cousin of the late Missouri Senator Stuart Symington; former Captain, USAF. While Governor, he witnessed to a massive craft up to a mile across over Arizona in 1997, also seen by hundreds of citizens. Although he attempted to investigate at the time, he also publicly spoofed the sighting so as not to add to the public hysteria, while keeping his own observation secret. He first revealed his sighting last March, and states that the craft is of unknown origin and the incident remains unsolved.

So lange nämlich schon war die Spezialabteilung DI55 des Ministeriums mit der Aufzeichnung und Auswertung von Ufo-Meldungen beschäftigt. Mehr als 7000 Fälle hat das Expertenteam in dieser Zeit in enger Kooperation mit den Geheimdiensten des Landes untersucht - praktisch alle Sichtungen, die den Behörden gemeldet wurden. Darunter finden sich so legendäre Fälle wie eine angebliche Ufo-Landung 1980 im Wald von Rendlesham, im südenglischen Suffolk, bei der auch radioaktive Strahlung freigesetzt worden sein soll.
Drei Jahre zuvor schon, 1977, hatte nach einem Bericht des Londoner Observer die Besatzung eines Vulcan-Bombers der Royal Air Force auf dem Rückflug von einer Militärübung über dem Golf von Biskaya sich von einer leuchtenden Untertasse verfolgt gesehen. Das in Orange und Grün getauchte Objekt wurde vom Radar des Bombers als "langer Schatten" verzeichnet. Pilot, Kopilot und Navigator der Vulcan berichteten dem Ministerium noch am selben Tag, sie seien "nicht in der Lage, eine logische Erklärung für die Erscheinung zu liefern".
Etwas nüchterner scheinen die Urteile der ministeriellen Fachleute der Abteilung DI55 auszufallen, die sich all die Jahre über mit Berichten wie diesem beschäftigten. Mit dem Enthüllungs-Beschluss wolle man einfach dem hartnäckigen Verdacht entgegen treten, der Staat verheimliche dem Volk Begegnungene mit Außerirdischen, meinen die Beamten.
Schon im vorigen Jahr hatte das Ministerium einen Bericht veröffentlicht, demzufolge sich UFOs häufig als Naturphänomene, als "Erdlichter" oder elektrisch aufgeladene Plasmawolken, erklären lassen. Auch geheime militärische Aktivitäten sind für UFO-Erscheinungen verantwortlich gemacht worden.
All denen aber, die fest davon überzeugt sind, dass mehr an der Sache ist, als die Regierung je zugeben würde, bietet auch die Öffnung der Archive keinen Beweis fürs Gegenteil. In Wirklichkeit, hört man schon UFO-Fans im Königreich sagen, werde das Verteidigungsministerium sicher nur harmlose Akten veröffentlichen und heikle Dokumente weiter zurück halten.
"Es spielt keine Rolle, wie viel Material die Behörden zur Verfügung stellen", meint der Sheffielder Uni-Dozent und UFO-Experte David Clarke. "Wer glauben will, dass es eine Verschwörung zur Verheimlichung Außerirdischer gibt, wird sich nie mit etwas anderem zufrieden geben."

Wenn diese Fälle ganz klar bewiesen werden könnten, dann wäre die außerirdische Hypothese die wahrscheinlichste Erklärung für diese fortschrittlichen Fluggeräte".
Wer diese Pressekonferenz gesehen hat, kann nicht länger annehmen, dass es sich beim UFO-Phänomen um eine Glaubenssache handelt. Die Realität ist: UFOs verletzen beinahe täglich den Luftraum irgendeines Landes auf diesem Planeten. Militärs und Geheimdienste wissen Bescheid - und vertuschen es.

USA sollen UFO-Forschung wieder aufnehmen
Fordert eine Gruppe von Piloten, Wissenschaftlern und Politikern
Washington - Bewerber um die Nominierung als US-Präsidentschaftskandidat werden bei Fernsehdebatten nur sehr selten verlegen. Als aber der demokratische Abgeordnete Dennis Kucinich vom NBC-Moderator Tim Russert "ernsthaft" nach seinem Erlebnis mit einem Unidentifizierten Flugobjekt (UFO) gefragt wurde, grinste der Politik-Profi sichtlich verunsichert. Tatsächlich habe er einmal nahe New York ein UFO gesehen, um fast entschuldigend hinzuzufügen: "Ex-Präsident Carter hat auch schon ein UFO gesehen". In der Tat schilderte dieser jüngst bei CNN, wie er in seiner Heimat Georgia einmal "ein eigenartiges Licht" am Himmel entdeckt habe, das "immer näher kam und größer wurde, die Farben wechselte von Blau zu Rot und Weiß - und dann wieder mit rasender Schnelligkeit verschwand".
Obwohl schon die irdischen Probleme der Weltmacht USA den Amerikanern derzeit genug Kopfzerbrechen bereiten, macht das Thema UFOs derzeit wieder Schlagzeilen, widmen ihm Starmoderatoren wie Larry King von CNN ganze Stundensendungen. Renommierte Ex-Politiker und Ex-Sicherheitsexperten verlangen nun von der US-Regierung, sich endlich mit der Frage außerirdischer Besucher zu beschäftigen. Die Forderung scheint populär. Umfragen zeigen laut NBC, dass ein Drittel aller US-Bürger an Besucher aus fremden Galaxien glaubt, 14 Prozent wollen schon selbst UFOs entdeckt haben. Die Frage nach der Existenz von fliegenden Untertassen und Intelligenz aus dem All hat - nicht zum ersten Mal - in den USA wieder einmal die Politik erreicht.
Zwar hatten bei der Debatte der Demokraten die Senatoren Hillary Clinton und Barack Obama pikiert lächelnd den Ausführungen ihres Parteifreundes Kucinich gelauscht und ihn angestarrt, als wäre er wirklich von einem anderen Stern. Aber in dieser Woche veröffentlichte die Clinton-Bibliothek in Little Rock (Arkansas) werbewirksam Dokumente des Weißen Hauses aus den Clinton-Jahren zum Thema Außerirdische. Einige Papiere wurden wegen "Schutzes der Privatsphäre" zurückgehalten. Futter für Verschwörungstheorien der Ufologen", lästerte der erzkonservative Fernsehsender Fox News. Die publizierten Papiere belegten höchstens, dass Spitzenberater Clintons Science-Fiction-Fans waren - aber dennoch lieferte das Clinton-Lager werbewirksam neues Material zum populären Thema.
Auch der demokratische Gouverneur von New Mexico, Bill Richardson, machte sich nach der Debatte über Kucinichs UFOs lustig, forderte dann aber ernsthaft eine Aufklärung des berühmten "Roswell-Zwischenfalls". Ufologen glauben, dass die US-Luftwaffe 1947 nahe des Wüstenortes Trümmer einer fliegenden Untertasse und Leichen von Außerirdischen entdeckt hatte, dies aber später zu vertuschen suchte. Zumindest lebt Roswell seither prächtig vom UFO-Tourismus und einem jährlichen UFO-Kongress. "Es würde helfen, wenn die US-Regierung alles veröffentlicht, was sie weiß", meinte Richardson.
Der Ex-Gouverneur von Arizona, Fyve Symington, nahm in Washington mit Experten aus aller Welt einen neuen Anlauf zur Anerkennung mysteriöser Flugobjekte. Er selbst habe 1997 wie hunderte Mitbürger auch über dem Himmel von Phoenix rasende Flugkörper gesehen, die in strenger Formation geflogen und keineswegs mit Lichtphänomenen zu erklären gewesen seien - auch wenn sie später als "Phoenix Lights" in die UFO-Annalen Eingang fanden.

Die Verteidigungsexperten Nick Pope (England) und James Penniston (USA) berichteten über geheime Untersuchungen ihrer Länder nach einem UFO-Zwischenfall 1993 im Rendelsham Forest nahe Ipswich (England). "Als wir an den Absturzort kamen, wurde rasch klar, dass es sich hier nicht um einen Flugzeugabsturz handelte, noch um irgendetwas, mit dem wir je etwas zu tun hatten", sagte Penniston. 1976 gab es dem iranischen Ex-General Parviz Jafari zufolge eine Kooperation Teherans mit Washington wegen eines UFOs, das angeblich über Teheran gesichtet worden war. US-Luftfahrtexperte John Callahan beschuldigte die US-Behörden, 1987 das Auftauchen eines riesigen UFOs über Alaska verschwiegen zu haben.
Die illustre Schar der UFO-Experten will nun vor allem erreichen, dass die US-Regierung eine Neuauflage des Untersuchungsprogramms der US-Luftwaffe über UFOs beschließt. Die Regierung müsse "bei der Aufklärung dieser äußerst realen Phänomene eine aktive Rolle spielen", meinte Symington. Das US-Projekt "Blaues Buch"
war 1969 nach 22 Jahren mangels greifbarer Ergebnisse eingestellt worden -obwohl die US-Luftwaffe damals
über 12.000 UFO-Meldungen nachgegangen war.

Als aber der demokratische Abgeordnete Dennis Kucinich vom NBC-Moderator Tim Russert "ernsthaft" nach seinem Erlebnis mit einem Unidentifizierten Flugobjekt (UFO) gefragt wurde, grinste der Politik-Profi sichtlich verunsichert. Tatsächlich habe er einmal nahe New York ein UFO gesehen, um fast entschuldigend hinzuzufügen: "Ex-Präsident Carter hat auch schon ein UFO gesehen". In der Tat schilderte dieser jüngst bei CNN, wie er in seiner Heimat Georgia einmal "ein eigenartiges Licht" am Himmel entdeckt habe, das "immer näher kam und größer wurde, die Farben wechselte von Blau zu Rot und Weiß - und dann wieder mit rasender Schnelligkeit verschwand".
Obwohl schon die irdischen Probleme der Weltmacht USA den Amerikanern derzeit genug Kopfzerbrechen bereiten, macht das Thema UFOs derzeit wieder Schlagzeilen, widmen ihm Starmoderatoren wie Larry King von CNN ganze Stundensendungen. Renommierte Ex-Politiker und Ex-Sicherheitsexperten verlangen nun von der US-Regierung, sich endlich mit der Frage außerirdischer Besucher zu beschäftigen. Die Forderung scheint populär. Umfragen zeigen laut NBC, dass ein Drittel aller US-Bürger an Besucher aus fremden Galaxien glaubt, 14 Prozent wollen schon selbst UFOs entdeckt haben. Die Frage nach der Existenz von fliegenden Untertassen und Intelligenz aus dem All hat - nicht zum ersten Mal - in den USA wieder einmal die Politik erreicht.
Zwar hatten bei der Debatte der Demokraten die Senatoren Hillary Clinton und Barack Obama pikiert lächelnd den Ausführungen ihres Parteifreundes Kucinich gelauscht und ihn angestarrt, als wäre er wirklich von einem anderen Stern. Aber in dieser Woche veröffentlichte die Clinton-Bibliothek in Little Rock (Arkansas) werbewirksam Dokumente des Weißen Hauses aus den Clinton-Jahren zum Thema Außerirdische. Einige Papiere wurden wegen "Schutzes der Privatsphäre" zurückgehalten. Futter für Verschwörungstheorien der Ufologen", lästerte der erzkonservative Fernsehsender Fox News. Die publizierten Papiere belegten höchstens, dass Spitzenberater Clintons Science-Fiction-Fans waren - aber dennoch lieferte das Clinton-Lager werbewirksam neues Material zum populären Thema.
Auch der demokratische Gouverneur von New Mexico, Bill Richardson, machte sich nach der Debatte über Kucinichs UFOs lustig, forderte dann aber ernsthaft eine Aufklärung des berühmten "Roswell-Zwischenfalls". Ufologen glauben, dass die US-Luftwaffe 1947 nahe des Wüstenortes Trümmer einer fliegenden Untertasse und Leichen von Außerirdischen entdeckt hatte, dies aber später zu vertuschen suchte. Zumindest lebt Roswell seither prächtig vom UFO-Tourismus und einem jährlichen UFO-Kongress. "Es würde helfen, wenn die US-Regierung alles veröffentlicht, was sie weiß", meinte Richardson.
Der Ex-Gouverneur von Arizona, Fyve Symington, nahm in Washington mit Experten aus aller Welt einen neuen Anlauf zur Anerkennung mysteriöser Flugobjekte. Er selbst habe 1997 wie hunderte Mitbürger auch über dem Himmel von Phoenix rasende Flugkörper gesehen, die in strenger Formation geflogen und keineswegs mit Lichtphänomenen zu erklären gewesen seien - auch wenn sie später als "Phoenix Lights" in die UFO-Annalen Eingang fanden.

Die Verteidigungsexperten Nick Pope (England) und James Penniston (USA) berichteten über geheime Untersuchungen ihrer Länder nach einem UFO-Zwischenfall 1993 im Rendelsham Forest nahe Ipswich (England). "Als wir an den Absturzort kamen, wurde rasch klar, dass es sich hier nicht um einen Flugzeugabsturz handelte, noch um irgendetwas, mit dem wir je etwas zu tun hatten", sagte Penniston. 1976 gab es dem iranischen Ex-General Parviz Jafari zufolge eine Kooperation Teherans mit Washington wegen eines UFOs, das angeblich über Teheran gesichtet worden war. US-Luftfahrtexperte John Callahan beschuldigte die US-Behörden, 1987 das Auftauchen eines riesigen UFOs über Alaska verschwiegen zu haben.
Die illustre Schar der UFO-Experten will nun vor allem erreichen, dass die US-Regierung eine Neuauflage des Untersuchungsprogramms der US-Luftwaffe über UFOs beschließt. Die Regierung müsse "bei der Aufklärung dieser äußerst realen Phänomene eine aktive Rolle spielen", meinte Symington. Das US-Projekt "Blaues Buch"
war 1969 nach 22 Jahren mangels greifbarer Ergebnisse eingestellt worden -obwohl die US-Luftwaffe damals
über 12.000 UFO-Meldungen nachgegangen war.

El Proyecto Libro Azul, operado por la fuerza aérea de ese país, fue suspendido a finales de los años 60.
El grupo, que incluye a ex oficiales militares de siete países, comprende a personas que dicen haber visto un OVNI o adelantado investigaciones sobre el fenómeno.
Cada año miles de personas dicen haber visto objetos voladores no identificados en Estados Unidos, y sus aseveraciones generalmente enfrentan escepticismo.

Plusieurs pilotes militaires et civils, réunis à Washington, ont rivalisé lundi de témoignages saisissants pour raconter leur étrange rencontre avec des objets volants non identifiés, espérant ainsi inciter les autorités à prendre au sérieux ces phénomènes inexpliqués, souvent tournés en dérision.
"Rien dans mon entraînement ne m'avait préparé à cela", assure James Penniston, officier retraité de l'armée de l'Air américaine, avant de raconter avoir vu et touché "un vaisseau triangulaire, illuminé de bleu et de jaune", qui était posé dans une forêt attenante à une base aérienne britannique à Woodbridge (GB) en 1980.
L'OVNI "était chaud au toucher et avait une texture métallique. L'un des côtés était couvert de symboles dont le plus grand était un triangle", raconte-t-il.
"La lumière s'est intensifiée (...) le vaisseau a décollé du sol sans bruit ni mouvement d'air et est parti incroyablement vite", devant plus de 80 personnes de la base. "Dans mon carnet, j'ai écrit +vitesse: impossible+".

M. Penniston fait partie d'un panel international d'une vingtaine de pilotes et de scientifiques, signataires d'une pétition réclamant de sérieuses investigations sur ce sujet.
"Que le gouvernement américain arrête de perpétuer le mythe selon lequel il existe une explication conventionnelle à tous les phénomènes d'Ovni. Notre pays doit rouvrir l'enquête", a déclaré lors d'une conférence de presse Fife Symington, ex-gouverneur d'Arizona lui-même témoin d'un Ovni en 1997.
Plus généralement, "pour des raisons de sûreté nationale et de sécurité aérienne, chaque pays devrait s'efforcer d'identifier tout objet circulant dans son espace aérien", soulignent ces personnalités.
"Malheureusement, le sujet des Ovni a été contaminé par de fausses informations, fournies aux médias par des personnes non qualifiées", déplore Rodrigo Bravo, un expert de l'armée de l'Air chilienne.
Pourtant, "l'un de nos plus illustres cas, en 1988, a montré que les Ovni pouvaient être un danger pour les opérations aériennes: un B737 en approche finale à Puerto Montt (sud) s'est retrouvé face à une grande lumière blanche entourée de vert et de rouge qui fonçait sur lui, et le pilote a dû faire un virage serré à gauche pour éviter une collision".
Lundi, les pilotes présents à Washington rivalisaient d'anecdotes tout aussi saisissantes, pour le plus grand plaisir des "croyants" dans la salle.
En 1976, Parviz Jafari, ex-pilote de chasse iranien, a tenté en vain d'attaquer à bord de son F-4 "un objet clignotant de lumières rouge, orange et bleu clair", au-dessus de Téhéran. Mais "dès que je m'approchais trop, mon armement était coincé et ma radio brouillée", se souvient-il.
Ancien commandant de bord d'Air France, Jean-Charles Duboc assure lui avoir observé "un Ovni près de Paris, pendant un vol Nice-Londres, qui ressemblait à un énorme disque, d'environ 300 mètres de diamètre" et qui a laissé une signature radar.
Mais "comme toutes les compagnies aériennes, Air France est soucieuse de son image. C'était très dur d'aborder le sujet", affirme l'ancien pilote.
"Qui croit aux Ovni? C'est l'attitude systématique de la FAA", l'autorité américaine de l'aviation civile, assure un de ses anciens cadres, John Callahan, découragé d'enquêter sur un Ovni repéré au-dessus de l'Alaska en 1987.
"Quand j'ai demandé au responsable de la CIA ce qu'il en pensait, il m'a dit +C'est bien un Ovni, mais on ne peut pas le dire au public américain, il paniquerait+", raconte-t-il.
Le phénomène est pourtant bien réel, selon Nick Pope, ancien du ministère britannique de la Défense: Sur les 10.000 signalements reçus par le gouvernement britannique depuis 1950, "la plupart des Ovni se sont révélés être des avions, des satellites et des météorites, mais dans 5% des cas, aucune explication n'a pu être établie".
